The Ministry of Public Utilities , Energy, Logistics & E-Governance, Belize Port Authority, Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management of the Netherlands, and International Maritime Organization – IMO have launched a Regional Workshop on the IMO 2023 GHG Strategy to Reduce Shipping Emissions in the Caribbean.
This two-day workshop being held at Best Western Plus Belize Biltmore from July 10-11, consists of participants from 18 Caribbean territories, along with private maritime institutions from the United States and United Kingdom. Participants have gathered to discuss the International Maritime Organization – IMO current energy efficiency framework and the 2023 IMO Greenhouse Gas Strategy.
Over 60 regional and international participants are in attendance addressing MARPOL Annex VI, which includes regulations for preventing air pollution from ships. The session is exploring the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). Participants are also examining various proposals aimed at mitigating climate change effects, discussing their feasibility, implementation challenges, and expected benefits for regional sustainability and resilience.
