On September 30th, the Micronesian Center for Sustainable Transport (MCST) shared a post on their Facebook page featuring Major Lloyd Jones (Ret), Chairman of the Belize Port Authority. The post emphasized the importance of supporting a universal levy on carbon emissions and rejected proposals that undermine the “Polluter Pays” principle. Major Jones expressed strong concern over attempts to shift the burden of shipping decarbonization costs to the public, rather than holding polluters accountable, advocating for revenues raised from carbon-related measures to benefit the broader economy instead of polluters themselves.
